Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden claims that the Magpies failed to react in the correct way after going 1-0 down against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

Centre back Chancel Mbemba put through his own net mid way through the first half and Hayden believes his Newcastle team mates lacked composure on the ball and began to get frustrated by Wolves’ defensive and long ball tactics when they started to chase the game. He told the Evening Chronicle:

“It was all about a reaction after going 1-0 down but they defended deeper and deeper. They didn’t really do anything apart from the counter attack and smashing it long. It was one of those games when maybe we need to be a bit more calm in possession after going a goal down. Maybe, we need to plot a better route through them than panicking.”

Chasing an equaliser, Newcastle gave away possession in midfield allowing Helder Costa to calmly curl a finish past Matz Sels to make it 2-0 on 62 minutes. Right back Vurnon Anita was then sent off late on for a foul on Ivan Cavaleiro but in truth by that time the match was all but over. The Magpies won’t have long though to put their defeat against Wolves behind them. They face the same opposition again at home in the EFL Cup tomorrow night.
