Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has revealed that there are many more leaders in the dressing room this campaign in stark contrast to last year when the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez has brought in a great deal of experience as well as a British core to the eight signings he has so far signed this summer, and Lascelles believes that there are now four or five players in the Newcastle squad who could easily replace him as captain and lead the team effectively. He told the Shields Gazette.

“Maybe, at the start of last season, this team did lack a bit of personality, but I think it’s changed a little bit now. We’ve brought in some massive players. Just because I’m the captain, it doesn’t mean other players can’t lead each other on the pitch. We’ve got three, four or five players who could wear the armband as well. It’s nice to play with them and have them in the squad.”

Among Newcastle’s new signings, they signed one club captain Grant Hanley from Blackburn Rovers as well as experienced players in Mo Diame, Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark who all have experience playing in the Premier League. Benitez appears not to be finished with his transformation of the Newcastle squad this summer yet though with three more signings expected by the end of August.
