Newcastle target Vurnon AnitaNewcastle United are working hard to complete their first major signing of the summer, with Vurnon Anita to discuss personal terms tomorrow after a £6.2 million fee was agreed with Ajax.

Newcastle have been working tirelessly to bring in players with little reward so far in this summer’s transfer window.

The Magpies are still no closer to a deal for Lille and France right back Mathieu Debuchy, but it appears that some progress has been made in the pursuit of Vurnon Anita.

A fee of eight million euros (approximately £6.2m) has been agreed with the versatile midfielder’s club, and now just personal terms have to be struck.

Anita played the full 90 minutes for Ajaz against AZ Alkmaar today in their 2-2 draw in the Eredivisie, and after the match had plenty to say to ajax.netwerk (in Dutch) about Newcastle’s approach.

He said that nothing has been agreed with Newcastle and that: “If the total picture is not good, I just stay at Ajax”, so a move is far from certain at this point.

When he says the total picture, let’s hope that he means the ambition of Newcastle and the quality of football in the Premier League, not how much money he can get in his wage packet.

Anita continued: “A departure would be weird. I played 13 years with Ajax”, which shows that if he was to leave Amsterdam for Newcastle it would be with a heavy heart.

With Anita expected to fly to the north-east tomorrow, Newcastle’s hierarchy have an important 24 hours ahead of them as they attempt to persuade the Dutchman to move to Tyneside.
