Newcastle United got the better of Liverpool on the pitch at St James’ Park last weekend, but who will emerge victorious in this transfer battle?

According to TribalFootball.com, Newcastle are ready to hijack Liverpool’s plans to sign £6 million-rated Barcelona starlet Ibrahim Afellay.

The 26-year-old Dutchman left his home town club of PSV last year for the La Liga champions, but has yet to make a real impact at the Nou Camp.

Injuries have held him back to some extent, but so has the immense competition that Barcelona have in forward positions from the likes of Cristian Tello and Ivan Cuenca, not to mention Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro.

Affelay, who can play in an advanced position as an attacking midfielder or a winger may be looking to cut his losses sooner rather than later having made just 30-odd appearances.

It is being reported that Liverpool’s Damien Comolli will revisit his interest in the Dutchman, who has 36 caps under his belt for the Netherlands, but will face competition from Inter Milan and now Newcastle.

Newcastle’s interest in the winger is far from concrete, but they are thought to be monitoring the situation and keeping abreast of any developments.

Alan Pardew could well end up purchasing a Dutch duo this summer, with the Magpies also of course heavily linked with Holland left back Erik Pieters, and with goalkeeper Tim Krul already at St James’ Park, the north-east could have more of a Dutch feel next year.

Although Barcelona only forked out a couple of million Euros for Affelay, £6m still represents a good price for someone with so much talent…

Newcastle’s backroom staff have outshone Liverpool this year, it all comes down to how much we’re willing to pay for him IMO Liverpool will be willing to pay more, but Merseyside is not as attractive a move as it was 9 months ago. Could go either way.

liverpool are a bigger club i bet the lad hasn’t herd ov newcastle and its near ? thats it liverpool is a better city and we have more dough

    • Phil says:

Yup, lots of dough for making bread.

    • The Geordie says:

Are you mental. Bigger club maybe better club not a chance and as for the city it is full of theives and smack rats. There is a difference between spending money and wasting money

    • Andy says:

He’s too young to remember when Liverpool were any good. Hows the view from down there Finn?

  • Sharpy17 says:

A Finn – typical bin dipper, you talk yourselves up bonnylad. It’s all well and good having more dough but if you have a moron manager who doesn’t know how to spend it wisely it counts for sweet FA. Anyway, at £6m isn’t this kid a bit on the cheap side for yous?!

    £35m … hahaha!!!!

  • Olufemi says:

This club is bigger than for any average player can walk in and out.we need players like cavani, lavezzi, mesut oezil, muniain those are the target which i think comolli should be aiming.

    • Sharpy17 says:

I really don’t know what world you live in … stick Messi and Ronaldo on ya list as well you deluded fool!!! Of course you need these player …. But you have absolutely no chance at all of getting any of them!!!

      • kenzie says:

your right mate, this guy lives in a world where liverpool are favourites to win the champions league and are unlucky to finish second in the PL. got a good laugh from olufemi though

  • News Bot says:

Liverpool is the perfect mausoleum for animals disguised as footballer wannabes. How else can you explain Dalglish’s recruitment of a donkey (Carroll), some mules (Henderson, Adam & Downing) to complement the existing pair of jackasses (Carragher & Lucas).

  • Lualua17 says:

Yeah finn he would really want to go to a club where there own fans thieve from their players when they are at the match.

  • Toon69 says:

I think you’ll find that after the Suarez/Evra debacle, not a lot of players will want to be linked to that sort of club anymore… bad publicity isn’t good for your street cred fella’s….

But hey, you can always pay over the odds for players & offer them mega-wages to entice them, only for your own fans to abuse them with silly, childish comments…

  • ian says:

cmon lads, newcastle have done brilliantly this season and deservedly so. if given a choice though, any right minded player would surely choose liverpool over most teams still. hopefully we (LFC) have got a few players in sight who will fit straight into the first team that have continental technique because thats what we are missing. maybe then our ‘flops’ or at least half of them will play to their potential because although not worth the sums that were paid they are still good players. i dont think any of them realised the pressure environment they were entering when playing for us.
..all the same, good luck to NUFC

    • Tom Jones says:

There’s no doubt that despite what’s gone on this season, Liverpool are still a draw for players

  • joe says:

god liverpool fans talk alot of shit, probably because they watch it week in week out

  • joe says:

by the way i think heskey is available for 35 million

  • ian says:

…we might buy him then if he’s going that cheap joe lol!
