Newcastle United have bought a couple of youngsters from Nottingham Forest in the past. The Magpies signed the talented Jermaine Jenas back in 2002 (I can’t believe that’s ten years ago!) for £5 million and then two years ago they signed the versatile James Perch for a couple of million. Now Newcastle are being linked with Forest winger Garath McCleary on TribalFootball.com.

McCleary is the man of the moment in the Championship right now. He’s simply on fire at the moment, following up a wonder goal against Coventry City last month with a four-goal haul against Leeds United at Elland Road on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old now has a strike rate of 1 in 2 this season and seems to be coming into a good run of form.

His current boss Steve Cotterill clearly thinks highly of him, stating: “He’s a wonderful boy, he really is. He’s scored more goals tonight [Tuesday] than games he played last season but he’s a great boy. He’s come from non-league, he’s a special talent, he’s raw, he’s got two good feet, he can head it, he’s strong. I think he can go on to be even better, I think he’s a top lad.”

McCleary has been at Nottingham Forest for four years and despite playing over 100 times for them, has only started to really make the headlines in recent weeks. Prior to joining Forest in 2008, McCleary played for Slough Town and then Bromley, with a link to Newcastle being that former Magpies’ coach Colin Calderwood took him to the City Ground.

Garath McCleary seems to be a late developer and performances like the one of Tuesday are sure to catch the eye of many Premier League managers, with West Brom’s Roy Hodgson also reported to be showing an interest. Here’s that wonder strike against Coventry…

And here are those four goals against Leeds, with his third effort (Forest’s fourth) particularly special…

Forest are a selling club at the moment. If the daft Geodies paid 2 mill for perch, Expect an offer of around 10 mill…Lol muppets

Doubt it will be 10million as he’s out of contract at end of season so a tribunal would set the fee. Shame for us at Forest as he has been pretty crap for 3 seasons just showing glimpses of what he can do. This year he has put it all together and is developing into the player (I) we thought he could so it will be sad to lose him.
He came from non-league and had to learn to play at this level which took a long time but he is ready to step up and would be a good player for you.
As long as you don’t send Perch the other way, how you thought it would be a good idea to sign our worst player is beyond me

Lets hope Newcastle practice what they preach and show a bit more class when dealing with Forrest than Chelsea have recently with their direct approaches and speaking to the press about Demba Ba and Chieck Tiote.
