Tottenham clearout to have Newcastle on alert?

While Newcastle United’s squad is far too small, Tottenham Hotspur are one Premier League team with too many players on their books. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is on the verge of having a summer clearout before bringing any new players in, with as many as seven Spurs players to leave within the next week. So far this summer, Newcastle have raided the French market with regular occurrence, but would Alan Pardew be wise to have a closer look at some of the players on offer at White Hart Lane?

Newcastle have brought in players from France because that’s where the value is, with there generally being a premium on Premier League players, especially those who are English. However, with Spurs keen to get rid, there might be a Tottenham player or two available for a bit of a bargain basement price. The seven Spurs players thought to be up for sale are Wilson Palacios, Peter Crouch, Jermaine Jenas, Alan Hutton, Sebastien Bassong, David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar. Would any of those be a hit at St James’ Park?

Two of them have played in a Newcastle shirt already – Jermaine Jenas and Sebastien Bassong. While the former will not be on Pardew’s radar, maybe the latter should. Bassong enjoyed a fantastic solitary season at Newcastle and many fans wouldn’t be adverse to him adding to that. The Frenchman has been subject of a £2 million bid from Bursaspor, and while Tottenham want more money, Newcastle might still be able to get the defender who could provide cover down the middle and left on the cheap.

In my opinion, Newcastle have a better version of Wilson Palacios in Cheik Tiote, even though the Ivorian was a bit sluggish against Sunderland on Saturday, and David Bentley wouldn’t really add a great deal to the squad as he’s gone off the boil in recent years. Then there’s Peter Crouch, who along with Jermain Defoe, has previously been linked with a move to the north east this summer. However, Pardew seems to have switched his attention back to France in that department, and Crouch is the wrong side of 30.

That leaves Niko Kranjcar and Alan Hutton. While Newcastle aren’t short of options in the middle of the park, I really like Kranjcar. The Croatian provides any team with plenty of creativity and can’t believe he doesn’t get more of a look-in for Spurs, especially as he impressed when he did start for Tottenham last season. Finally there’s Hutton, who has already played in the north east for Sunderland, and with Danny Simpson not every fan’s cup of tea, the Scottish international could provide some competition at right back.

While Tottenham may be getting rid of a lot of deadwood this summer, there are one of two diamonds in the rough. I thought Bassong’s Newcastle career was cut far too short and would love to see it be resumed. Kranjcar would provide another option in midfield and Hutton could give Simpson a run for his money. Newcastle’s French revolution is all well and good, but there’s no substitute for Premier League experience.

Moving from Tottenham Reserves to Newcastle would be a step down.

Get back under that bridge from where you came, troll.

    • David says:

I wonder if your command of English is poor – you mean “moving from Tottenham Reserves to Newcastle would be a step UP”!! Newcastle is so bad and so far behind Tottenham in quality! If they don’t get Hutton and Bassong, thye are likely to find themselves fighting against relegation throughout the season.

      Shut up

  • kimchibaka says:

Think Hutton and Bassong could do excellent jobs for you. A £2m bid for Bassong is a joke.

  • Fat Ba**ard says:

to christospur get a life mate you only have to look at our club to see what happens when you think you’re the dogs bollox one minute and the next you’re relegation fodder, we were everybodys second team just because we spent money and played decent football just like your team is now the only difference is your not everybodys second team

  • poolietoon says:

to be honest wouldnt have any of them one thing under ashley we dont buy has beens who only care about their pockets and not our club

  • Glenn says:

All of what you say makes perfect sense.

Except when it comes to a reality check, your suggestions involve spending money, and we know that’s one thing the greedy fat barstewart won’t do, so it ain’t gonna happen.

Dan, totaly agree. Hutton will competite fairly with Simpson and Bassong was good here last time and can also cover LB. Krancjar is good, but we have many midfielders. But Hutton and Bassong for cut prices I will say a big yes!

    • ISM says:

Barcodes can av Hutton for 4 mill, and Bass only if we get Cahill but Niko ain’t for sale-AT ANY PRICE

  • MadAboutToon says:

bassong is shit, he’s alway pulling on players and giving away pens. i do not know how people like him or how he got player of year for us. the only thing i like about him is the 8 mill spuds paid. hahaha he not even worth what we paid, 1 or 2 mill

    • ISM says:

If him bad blud, why he leave your club at first opportunity eh? Worse club may be more apt.

  • Ash-out says:

Old Bloodhound Face won’t be giving players away cheaply. He’s as tight and slippery as Ashley when it comes to cash.
Would really like Krancjar who’s an excellent performer but wouldn’t give traitor Bassong the opportunity to return to the Park. Hope he ends up playing for Tranmere or some other such club.
Even if ‘arry did put a good price on his players Ashley wouldn’t buy anyway so the whole exercise is a bit pointless really.

  • Phil K says:

    Nay nay and thrice nay.
    Bunch of overpaid too-old poseurs.
Redknapp has already laughably overpriced Crouch and the Russian – three times what they’re actually worth.

  • Goal Mouth says:

Spuddy cast off, waste’s of money, panic buys, in an attempt to get in first, but haplessly overpaid for them all.
    Igor (‘arry) what a mong!

Git fat NA to the lot of them.

You daft spuddies pay their bloated wages.

    PPPfffftttttt!

    • ISM says:

and your team isn’t the no1 opitomy o that in the whole Prem then?Pards’ll take ya down boy

  • digispurs says:

All of those players would walk in to the Newcastle team.

  • Erlend says:

Bassong I would have. Not Hutton under any cicumstances. Kranjcar could possibly be good as well.

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

  • Lyle says:

Shocking ain’t it a couple of years back we used to sell our rubbish to Spurs now they are trying to sell their rubbish to the Toon. How things change we don’t want cast offs like the lady boy and Bassong we’ve had them already we know what their like. One runs around a lot but diappears up his own backside whilst Bassong a canny player but like Enrique prone to drop big clangers every match.Krajcar the only possibility if the price is right come on down and play at home in front of a big passionate crowd at a big beautiful stadium.

    • Tom Jones says:

Times do change, but there’s nothing like a big of bargain hunting, just ask Mr Ashley!

  • Sharpy17 says:

I know why you have wrote this with ashleys connections with spurs. Bassong is French so would walk into the team, Hutton would give gud cover it RB and I heard the scum were quoted 11m for Niko so that wld rule him out… the rest you can keep!
