Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote could be set to join La Liga side Sporting Gijon this month, according to the Chronicle.
The Ivorian joined the Magpies way back in 2010 and is one of the club’s longest serving players, though hasn’t had much in the way of game time under Rafa Benitez of late. Following the emergence and arrivals of more dynamic options in central midfield, the 30-year-old has slipped far down the pecking order.
In fact, Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Birmingham City could be his last appearance for the club, with the report claiming he is negotiating the terms of his release from St. James’ Park. La Liga side Sporting Gijon are believed to have in talks with the ex-FC Twente man, who cost the Toon Army around £3.5m over half a decade ago now.
While progress over the deal is thought to have been slow, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has also revealed a deal could be close.
Tiote (Newcastle) could be soon moving to Sporting Gijon if nothing goes wrong. Last details to be ironed out…
