Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has hailed the “amazing” atmosphere at St James’ Park last night as they saw Newcastle turnaround a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory in the dying moments of the match.

Goals from Yoan Gouffran and Dwight Gayle in injury time helped secure a vital win for the Magpies and Benitez could not highlight his delight after the match celebrating with the players in the middle of the pitch. He told the Shields Gazette:

“Every year, every game, every stadium is different, but to feel the fans here when you are scoring goals and winning games like that is amazing.”

Not normally one for being overly excitable, Benitez admitted that he allowed himself a little fist pump after the final whistle. He even received a bear hug from Aleksandar Mitrovic who lifted the Spaniard off the ground in delight after the remarkable turnaround.

The Magpies will have to get their feet back on the ground very quickly though as they travel to Rotherham on Saturday for their next league match. The Millers are bottom of the league after just one win in ten matches under manager Alan Stubbs.
