With both bidding to beat the drop at the time, his moving to Tyneside was seen as a major coup for the Toon Army, who finally had a deep-lying playmaker at long last.
Still, the England international was largely disappointing aside from his home debut against West Ham and the Magpies’ form only improved after he was dropped.
However, the 24-year-old has been fantastic in the Championship.
There’s no question the ex-Liverpool man is a cut above the rest in terms of quality, though the question has always in regards to his mentality.
Still, he went some way into proving his doubters wrong with a majestic performance against Norwich City last night.
