Former Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid would be open to a return to the Tyneside club to help them battle back from The Championship, according to The Chronicle.

The 23-year-old was on the North East outfit’s books for four years between 2011 and 2015, but has since been offloaded to Panathinaikos.

With Abeid starring for the Greek side and showing the potential that never came to fruition in England, a host of teams are said to be scouting him including Porto, Marseille and Valencia.

However, an insider has revealed that the Algeria international would be open to a return to St James’ Park next season.

“If Newcastle want Mehdi next season he’d be happy to come back and help the team – even if they drop into the Championship,” he said.

The versatile midfielder was not given much of a chance to show what he was capable of with the Magpies and as such may well have a point to prove to the Toon fans.

If Rafa Benitez’s side are relegated this season a host of players are expected to leave and as such bringing back a player familiar with the club could be an option to help them return to the top flight – a bet well worth making with your Matchbook.com code.
