Callum Wilson admitted he understood the thinking behind his substitution during Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

The forward marked his return to the side after a reasonably lengthy lay-off with an instinctive goal to open the scoring at Craven Cottage and could even have had another, though missed a glorious chance not exactly in keeping with just how prolific he’s been since signing for the club.

As ever with Wilson, it’s not a question of his quality, but more of fitness. Indeed, it is amazing to think just how high his tally would be for the club had he not effectively missed a whole campaign through various injuries following a 2020 move from Bournemouth.

Luckily, Newcastle were in such a strong position in the second-half after Miguel Almiron (2) and Sean Longstaff had added to Wilson’s strike that Eddie Howe was able to take Wilson off and replace him with Ryan Fraser.

Given Alexander Isak’s injury, wrapping Wilson up in cotton wool certainly seems like the best of course action.

What did Wilson say about the decision?

Speaking to BBC Sport, Wilson said: “No striker, when your team is 4-0 up, is going to be happy to come off. I understand the thinking but once you take emotion out of it you understand it.

“That’s my mentality, I always want to score. I am playing catch-up, so today was a perfect opportunity to get some goals behind me.”
