Newcastle United have confirmed their 25-man Premier League squad.

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

Following the signing of Loris Karius before the deadline, the club have confirmed the make-up of Eddie Howe’s squad for the first half of the season.

The most notable absence of course is that of Emil Krafth’s. After turning his career on Tyneside around and earning a new contract over the course of the summer, the Swede suffered knee ligament damage during last month’s win over Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup and will now miss months of action.

Karl Darlow and Jonjo Shelvey, however, are included despite injury problems of their own. As a result of Karius’ arrival, Mark Gillespie has been left out, while Elliot Anderson does not need to be registered due to his age.

Where are the biggest weaknesses?

The biggest issue facing Howe is a lack of depth.

Clearly, that’s only to be expected given the early stage of the club’s new era, but the likes of Sean Longstaff and Jacob Murphy would surely be considered major downgrades on Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin, who have both suffered injuries already this season.

Elsewhere, neither Ryan Fraser or Miguel Almiron have proven prolific on the wings, so perhaps that is the one key area Newcastle need to strengthen over the next couple of windows. Indeed, players such as James Maddison and Moussa Diaby were touted as targets during the summer transfer window, which perhaps gives an indication as to where the club are next looking to invest.
