Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark remained committed to the cause at Newcastle United despite largely losing their places in the team, according to Louise Taylor in The Guardian

What’s the latest Newcastle United news?

Lascelles and Clark, so often Newcastle’s main central defensive pairing as Rafa Benitez looked to restore a sense of pride to the club between 2016 and 2019, look to have been left behind.

Clark’s last contribution was a reckless sending off against Norwich City in December with the Republic of Ireland international cut from the 25-man Premier League squad after the January transfer window. Lascelles, meanwhile has only been afforded 97 minutes of action since Dan Burn came into the team for the win over Aston Villa in February.

How have the pair reacted?

Although both of their the long-term Newcastle careers look under threat, particularly with the club still keen on signing Sven Botman, there has been some interesting insight into how things are developing behind the scenes.

Lascelles is said to have accepted Burn’s arrival with “good grace” while Clark has not “neglected to do his bit for the cause” in training. Now, perhaps that’s what should be expected of professionals, but it’s undoubtedly pleasing to hear.

Indeed, Newcastle have certainly suffered with dressing room problems before.

What is the latest on their futures?

Speaking to Football Insider earlier this week, pundit Paul Robinson suggested Lascelles was on “borrowed time” at St James’ Park.

Clark, meanwhile, was reported by Craig Hope to have rejected a loan move to Middlesbrough on Deadline Day.

With Fabian Schar potentially signing a new deal, Botman targeted and Burn impressing, it’s difficult to see how either stay long-term.
