What’s the story?
The report claims manager Steve Bruce is keen on a move for the 19-year-old Romanian defender and is pushing hard to sign him.
They, along with RB Leipzig, are understood to be willing to offer him a route out of Turin, where he is out of contract in the summer.
Would it be a good move?
Dragusin’s lack of experience in senior football obviously make it hard to judge, given he has only made four appearances for Juve’s first-team. Still, the fact he is rubbing shoulders with Cristiano Ronaldo and company at one of the continent’s major clubs does hint at a certain level of natural talent and he was also linked with the likes of Chelsea.
Where would he fit in?
Both Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez are out of contract over the course of the summer, so perhaps there could space to bring in a developing defender. After all, Bruce was thought to have wanted another signing in that department during the January transfer window and the capture of a highly-rated young player to have already played for one of the biggest teams in the world would an exciting development on that front.
As a young man, he would come with potential sell-on value too, which may appeal to the hierarchy at St. James’ Park.
Luring someone away from Juventus would be a coup for Newcastle but, frankly, it’s hard to see him leaving Turin. Back in December, Florin Manea (his agent) told TMW (via The Sun): “we’ve never had the idea of leaving Juventus, signing a new deal will not be a problem.”
With that in mind, it does seem like agent talk more than anything, even if Newcastle do retain an interest in the player.
