According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are monitoring Josef Martinez’s situation with Atlanta in the MLS as they look to potentially strengthen an attack that has seen their centre-forward options score just one league goal between them this season.

The 26-year-old, a former teammate of Miguel Almiron’s of course, scored 27 goals in 29 league games last season (per Transfermarkt) and has previously been described as a forward who can use ‘good movement and an excellent vertical jump as opposed to strength’, potentially providing another option to the likes of Joelinton and Andy Carroll.

Recently, the Venezuelan hinted he missed his former teammate in Almiron and, while the Chronicle’s report does not exactly suggest any move for Martinez is imminent, they do claim head of recruitment Steve Nickson has previously scouted him.

With that in mind, a number of Newcastle fans online reacted positively to the rumours, as you can see in the tweets below after @NUFC360 relayed the story.
