OPINION

You have to feel sorry for Steve Bruce. Just as his Newcastle United side were beginning to build up some serious momentum, putting together a run of three games unbeaten in the Premier League, his squad has been hit by a mini-injury crisis, forcing him to reassess his options for the Toon Army’s trip to Burnley on Saturday. Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almiron, and Allan Saint-Maximin all missed on the starting XI against the Clarets, and one of the men who came into to deputise for that trio, Christian Atsu, did very little to impress supporters in the first half against Sean Dyche’s men. The Ghanian winger sparked ire at one point in particular when he failed to have a shot on goal when it looked as if he simply had to test the goalkeeper, and that frustrating passage of play was enough to get many supporters on his back. Perhaps his reluctance to shoot shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise though, with the wide man averaging just 0.4 shots per game in the Premier League this season, as per Whoscored. Either way, he needs to show more confidence if he wants to have an impact.
