OPINION

For weeks and weeks now, the common consensus surrounding Joelinton has been that something had to give. With just one goal to his name in a black and white shirt, it was painfully obvious that the Brazilian was struggling to adapt to life at Newcastle United, and as a result, it has felt increasingly as if something had to be done to solve the conundrum he was posing. With a barrage of injuries to contend with on their trip down to Burnley on Saturday, Steve Bruce was forced into actually trying something a bit alternative with the Brazilian, and ended up putting him on the left wing in place of the absent Allan Saint-Maximin. Big mistake. Aside from anything else, the South American was lucky to make it to half time after a couple of fairly horrendous challenges in the first half, but onwards he pressed, and perhaps he shouldn’t have bothered. Having averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per game so far this season, as per Whoscored, you might have expected something a bit more coherent from the 23-year-old, but instead, he looked lost and clumsy throughout. If things don’t turn round soon, Joelinton could be the most costly flop in Toon history.
