Any potential takeover of Newcastle United before the January transfer window is highly unlikely, according to the Chronicle.
The newspaper claim on their website that despite reports suggesting that the Orlegi Group had met with Mike Ashley and were serious about securing a takeover [The Athletic], that is not likely to happen this season.
The Chronicle has reported that the Newcastle hierarchy are working on possible deals with no knowledge of any potential takeover being imminent.
It is suggested that Newcastle do not expect any fresh offers with nothing close to completion in regards to Peter Kenyon and the Orlegi Group.
OPINION
Will the takeover talk at Newcastle ever end? Ashley doesn’t seem to ever be in a position to leave the club despite grumbles from the fans, and that could suggest that his price at St James’ Park could be way too high. With the Magpies improving under Steve Bruce, that gives fans hope that any interested investors will not be scared away by the potential of relegation at the end of this season. Having said that, the higher Newcastle climb the Premier League, there is potential that Ashley could even raise his price – something that would surely send the Magpies’ faithful into meltdown. The point here is that no matter what happens, a takeover in the North East will never be straight forward, and even before this report, not many would really have thought that the Orlegi group were closing in. With the hierarchy at the club continuing, as usual, it looks like there may be at least one more season of Ashley taking his place on matchday.
