Newcastle United have entered the hunt to sign Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida, according to Takvim.
The Turkish outlet claim on their website that the Magpies have entered the hunt to sign the 30-year-old enforcer alongside Premier League rivals West Ham United, Brighton, and Norwich City.
Takvim go on to report that Steve Bruce’s side and Brighton could both be tempted to launch an £8.5million offer for Vida after closely following his progress recently.
Vida has made 10 appearances in the Turkish League already this season and has also competed in every single minute of Besiktas’ Europa League campaign in which they share a group with Wolves.
OPINION
This move would literally make zero sense for Newcastle, who must immediately knock any interest on its head, and quick. The last thing that the Magpies need right now is another defender, especially given their huge strength in depth in that area. The heart of defence has probably been the highlight of Bruce’s side in the Premier League this season, with numerous options being selected and making a massive impact. Even with Jamaal Lascelles being ruled out through injury, both Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune are set to return from their setbacks and lead the Magpies with a selection headache, so another defender would only make things worst. There is no doubting the experience that Vida holds, and with a World Cup final behind him, he would offer great strength, but nothing more than Newcastle already have at St James’ Park, and they must abort any potential move in January or the summer.
