OPINION
Sean Longstaff has reportedly been told that he needs to do more to earn a new contract at Newcastle United. According to the Telegraph, the Magpies are reluctant to hand the 22-year-old a second new deal in the space of 12 months as his representatives want to make him one of the top earners at the club. Newcastle don’t seem sold on that idea unless Longstaff can prove to them he is worth it – and some fans on Twitter are not happy with that reported stance. Longstaff has been widely reported to have been on the radar of Manchester United and some have pointed out that should be a reason alone for the midfielder to bag a new deal. However you can understand this stance from the club’s point of view. Longstaff reportedly wants to be a top-earner at St James’ Park yet he has just 17 Premier League appearances to his name to brag about. He’s hardly in a great position until he’s played a lot more. He could also do better than he is doing lately too.

Funny that he needs to do more in #NUFC eyes and not #MUFC https://t.co/c2YKqjEKfn

I quite like this whether it’s true or not. He only recently got a better deal and he’s looked OK this season but that’s it. This kind of stance should keep a top prospect hungry.
Of course it might be conjecture.
