Newcastle United’s January transfer budget will not be affected by the drop in profits of Mike Ashley’s holding company, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 80% loss in profits will not change any transfer plans and Steve Bruce has received assurances that he will have money to spend on his squad.

The Chronicle report that Bruce is set to meet with Steve Nickson and Lee Charnley midway through the week to discuss his plans, with Ashley well aware that relegation would seriously dent his profits even further.

It is suggested that Bruce has his own plans for January, but will still work hand-in-hand with Newcastle staff behind the scenes.

OPINION

This will be music to the ears of every single Newcastle fan, as they will know their team is desperate for reinforcements in the winter window. When it was revealed that Ashley’s profits had dropped significantly by 80%, they would have feared the worst and it wouldn’t have surprised them if the controversial owner was not able to stump up the cash for players in January. Bruce will go into his meeting with Nickson and Charnley through the week in good spirits after seeing his side dismantle West Ham in the Premier League, and although he will have been disappointed to concede two goals, he finally saw his attack click together and cause real problems at the London Stadium. Three months into the season, Bruce will know where his side needs to strengthen, and he will have an idea of the players he wants, and now is the time to hopefully get on the front foot early before the window opens.
