Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce has elicited a mixed response from the club’s fanbase after he commented, as per the Northern Echo, that it took ‘two and a half months’ for the club to sort out goalkeeper Martin Dubravka’s long-term contract extension, which the Magpies announced on their official website earlier this week. Some of the club’s supporters evidently deem that an ‘absurd’ amount of time, and have used Bruce’s remarks as an opportunity to launch an attack on Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley. But is two and a half months really a long time to sort out a contract extension? We’ve seen at other clubs, noticeably in the case of David de Gea at Manchester United, that it can take quite a lot longer than that. There’s a lot to be sorted out with these deals, while they’re not under massive time constraints either. With that said, a few months probably isn’t an unrealistic time frame for a new deal to get sorted. That’s the point that some other Newcastle fans have made, with the fanbase clearly split on this one.
