Mark Douglas has revealed that Steve Bruce has been left very impressed with Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar this season.
The Chronicle journalist shared that the Swiss international has emerged as a key figure in the dressing room at St James’ Park and the Magpies’ boss vastly appreciates his ability.
Bruce has been particularly impressed with Schar’s skill in possession for his side in the heart of a back five alongside Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark currently.
“The Newcastle head coach has been very impressed by Fabian Schar, a straight talker who is emerging as a key figure in the dressing room, and greatly values what he can do on the ball as well as that resilience he has shown in recent weeks with some crucial clearances and interceptions,” he wrote on the Chronicle website.
Schar has been ever-present for the Magpies this season, starting all eight games in the league and only missing out when being replaced against Liverpool through injury.
OPINION
After a shaky start to the season under Bruce, it was hard to see if any of the Newcastle squad had particularly impressed with their efforts. The Magpies’ defence were bombarded by opposition attackers in each and every game, and the Magpies looked hopeless and destined for failure. Pass forward a couple of months, and Bruce’s side have picked up two impressive wins over Tottenham and Manchester United, and things have started to look up slightly in the North East. Schar has been one of those players who has spearheaded their rise recently, and the Swiss international has played a massive role in that. The 27-year-old has averaged 2.8 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per game according to WhoScored, the most in both departments from any defender in the entire squad. Schar’s importance is undeniable this season, and Bruce would be in a much worst predicament if he didn’t have him to call upon.
