Elias Sorensen was clearly blown away by seeing Luke Charman’s goal for Newcastle United’s Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Although Neil Redfearn’s side lost 2-1 against League Two side Macclesfield at the Moss Rose, 21-year-old Charman was the player to grab the headlines with a beautiful goal early in the second half.

Charman picked up the ball in the Macclesfield half before using his left foot to curl the ball into the top corner.

It was not enough to win the match but Sorensen, who is currently on loan at Carlisle, was thrilled with what he saw from one of his Newcastle team-mates.

“Wow,” said the Dane via his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

It was a superb goal by Charman, who hit the back of the net for the first time this season when he curled that effort into the Macclesfield goal. He has played five times now this season, with four appearances for the Under-23s side in Premier League 2 before representing the Under-21s at Macclesfield. It remains to be seen whether or not Charman will appear on Steve Bruce’s radar with a goal like that but it certainly cannot hurt his chances of ever getting into the senior squad when he’s scoring absolute beauties. Charman’s unlikely to get that chance though. Joelinton is probably going to the Bruce’s first-choice striker all season as long as he doesn’t get injured while there are also Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto down the pecking order who are vying for an opportunity. Charman has just four senior appearances to his name from a loan spell at Accrington Stanley. Maybe another loan move is in order for the youngster.
