The national newspaper claim West Brom are pushing hard to sign the Magpies forward and despite Steve Bruce continuing to make it clear that he wants the player to stay, he enjoyed his loan spell at the Hawthorns and is keen on a return.
The Telegraph report Gayle is understood to be upset that Newcastle decided to take the No.9 shirt off him in order to give it to their new Brazilian forward Joelinton.
The Telegraph’s report states that it’s unclear whether WBA can afford to pay Gayle’s wages but the club is exploring the possibility of signing him on loan again with an option to buy.
It’s no surprise that WBA are in the hunt to sign Gayle once again as he played a massive part in their promotion push last season. The 28-year-old scored 24 goals and assisted eight in the 41 appearances he made for the Baggies across all competition, with all his goals either coming in the league or the play-offs. It’s also not a shock that Gayle may want to return to WBA as he no doubt felt loved there after being so prolific for them. In fact, the Telegraph’s report even states that West Brom re-signing Gayle would prove to be a hugely popular decision amongst fans and that shows how he’d effectively get a hero’s welcome if he signs for them. However, if Bruce is set on keeping him and WBA don’t have the financial muscle to force the Magpies to consider an offer for him, he is going nowhere. With the Magpies not having many out-and-out centre-forwards to call upon, it seems smart to keep Gayle even though his record in the Premier League is disappointing. He has scored only 21 goals in 99 Premier League appearances, and his shooting accuracy is only 36% across his top-flight outings (Source: Premier League).
