Newcastle United have knocked back approaches from Stoke City and West Brom for striker Dwight Gayle, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football outlet claim that both clubs had enquired and were interested in taking the 28-year-old either on loan or in a permanent deal.

Football Insider report that Gayle is set to stay at St James’ Park, with Steve Bruce keen to keep ahold of the striker who will be a part of his plans for next season.

Gayle spent last season on loan in the Championship with West Brom, firing them to the playoffs after scoring 23 goals in his 39 league appearances.

OPINION

Bruce appears to have made up his mind regarding the future of Gayle, and that is that the forward is set to stay. With the news regarding the 28-year-old surely putting an end to any hopes of the Magpies signing another forward in the remaining two days of the transfer window. It could be a big risk given the forward’s record in the Premier League throughout his career. When you compare Gayle in the Championship to the top-flight, it is as if you are looking at two different players, with the 28-year-old scoring 38 more goals in the second tier, despite the fact that he has only made one more appearance in the Championship. Bruce could have made this decision as he could have left it too late to bring in another forward, with Joelinton the only out-and-out forward to come in during the summer. Gayle definitely has a point to prove and Bruce could be set to point that to him to give his striker extra motivation to make a big impact on Tyneside next season, with an impact role off the bench most likely.
