Newcastle United striker Elias Sorensen is still training with the club’s U23s, despite a lack of senior striking options on Tyneside, according to the Chronicle.
The Magpies only have Dwight Gayle, Joselu, and Yoshinori Muto as recognised striking options, but have not called the 6’2″ Dane [Transfermarkt] up to train alongside the first team.
Sorensen hit 20 goals for the Magpies reserves last season before a wholly unsuccessful loan spell at Blackpool halted his momentum.
OPINION
You have to feel for Sorensen a little. By rights, he should have been jumping on the departures of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon, and really staking a claim for a regular first team squad role. Who knows, had he stayed on Tyneside and kept on banging in the goals for the U23s he might have managed to have a better crack at it. Instead, all the early season momentum he built up in the north east was bled dry by a loan spell at Blackpool that amounted to a single 32 minute cameo. And it just goes to show how much of a minefield the professional game can be for young players. On paper, that moved looked like a great idea for the Dane, but instead, it has maybe set him back by half a season. That’s a real shame, but unless United pull their finger out and sign a forward or two, Sorensen could yet still be called upon to help out the Toon Army next season.
