Newcastle United have paid Sheffield Wednesday to bring in Steve Bruce as their new manager, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 58-year-old boss has been heavily lined with a move to Tyneside in recent times, and it is understood that a deal has been struck to make that happen.

The Sun had previously reported that United could end up paying up to £6 million for the manager and certain members of his backroom staff.

OPINION

This has been coming for some time, but it feels like the surest sign yet that an announcement is very, very imminent. Bruce may not be the eye-catching name that fans were hoping for, but knowing the Geordie faithful, they will give him their backing until he gives them a reason not to. He has a decent enough record in the dugout, and has averaged about 1.6 points per match in each of his last two jobs [Transfermarkt], but it will be that way that he handles the owner that will be a better indicator of whether or not he will be a success. If it becomes clear from the outset that his intentions are simply to go along with whatever Mike Ashley wants from him, then he will become a figure of hate pretty quickly. If he shows some backbone, however, like Rafa Benitez did, then he could still make a decent situation out of what appears to be a poisoned chalice.
