Newcastle United could sign a new winger from the Championship this summer, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The reporter was asked on Twitter on Wednesday night whether there is truth in rumours that the Magpies are looking at an ‘English-based winger’.

Douglas replied via his personal Twitter account that he is looking into a link that he reckons could be pulled off by Newcastle, adding that the unnamed player is from the Championship.

OPINION

Newcastle need to add new players in almost every area of their squad this summer, except for maybe at centre-back and in goals, and the wide attacking area is certainly one that cannot be ignored. At the moment Steve Bruce has inherited a squad that is very short in quality and depth and Newcastle simply cannot expect to avoid relegation next season when their winger options are players like Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie. Although they’re not awful players, they can definitely be improved upon. The Championship has an abundance of good young wingers who the Magpies should be trying to sign and someone who stands out is Hull City star Jarrod Bowen. He is 22-years-old, English and was in top form last season as he scored 22 goals in 46 Championship appearances. He’s certainly good enough for the Premier League and certainly good enough to walk into Newcastle’s starting line-up. Bruce’s link to Hull could help get this one done.
