Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie has delivered a breaking news update on Newcastle United’s swoop for Hoffenheim attacker Joelinton.

The Magpies’ pursuit of the Brazilian has been ongoing for some time now, and now Downie has revealed that the move is in its final stages.

“BREAKING: Joelinton is on Tyneside for a medical ahead of record-breaking transfer from Hoffenheim to Newcastle United,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Unsure of fee yet but in the region of £30m #NUFC,” he said, before adding: “Update: Understand the fee is in the region of £40m(!) for Joelinton. Record breaking transfer for both Newcastle & Hoffenheim.”

OPINION

Well, this one seems almost done. It appears that the only thing left to do is complete the player’s medical and have him put pen to paper. Once that is over, Joelinton will be a Newcastle player and we’ll probably be treated to some ‘fun’ social media announcement of his signing. Downie is a pretty reliable source of information where Newcastle are concerned, and so this is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly – although the location of his tweet being ‘Dublin City, Ireland’ throws into doubt just how sure he can be of this news. As for the fee, £40million seems like a fair deal for a proven European performer who is still just 22 years of age. Although it’s probably more than Mike Ashley would like to pay, it’s worth reminding fans that this is the second time the club will have broken their transfer record in the past seven months. Credit to the club for that, but there’s still much work to be done in rebuilding this squad.
