This entire summer – the whole season, really – has been an agonising wait for Newcastle United’s supporters to find out what manager Rafael Benitez decides to do in regards to his future with the club.
As it stands he is out of contract at the end of this month. However, The Chronicle reported on Tuesday that talks between the Magpies and Benitez over a new deal for the Spaniard have largely been completed. The club are now waiting to find out his decision.
So the board have seemingly done all they can to get Benitez to sign a new contact. Whether that’s enough remains to be seen, and you have to think that we’ll find out soon.
Clearly the club have laid their cards on the table and it’s now up to the manager to determine whether he wants to operate under the terms offered or not.
There’s no doubt, though, that the Newcastle fans will have everything crossed that he decides to stay. The state of play has been revealed, now it is seemingly up to the former Liverpool boss what happens moving forward.
Obviously Benitez’s decision is complicated by the uncertainty surrounding the Magpies’ future. Nobody knows right now whether it’s going to be Mike Ashley or the Bin Zayed Group in charge of the club at the start of next season. So would you want to commit your future when you don’t know who you’re committing it to?
That’s what Benitez will be thinking, but he knows the ball is in his court right now. But, as mentioned, there’s only one decision the Newcastle supporters will be hoping for. Let’s hope that it materialises.
