Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is likely to be sold this summer, according to The Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the former Swansea City man will probably be moved on during the upcoming transfer window, along with fellow midfielder Isaac Hayden.

Mohamed Diame is set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the month, while striker Joselu looks almost certain to depart for Spanish side Alaves.

Shelvey has amassed 111 appearances in all competitions for Rafael Benitez’s team since joining from the Welsh outfit in January 2016.

OPINION

This has seemed pretty inevitable for some time now, although we’ve never had a report where they’ve outright said Shelvey is likely to depart this summer. Certainly, he lost his way for Newcastle this season. The England international went from being one of the Magpies’ most important players to barely being able to get a game. However, he gave a reminder of his quality in the final day demolition job against Fulham, where he scored a fantastic goal. So he still has the ability to make the difference at this level, but he’s clearly not as high in Benitez’s favour as he used to be. Hayden, Diame, Sean Longstaff and Ki Sung-yueng were all chosen over him at various points of the campaign, likely leaving him wondering what he had to do to get back in his manager’s good graces. So it would make sense for him to leave this summer, but he’d depart with a sense of what might have been amongst the supporters.
