Newcastle United will have to be canny this summer.

While the promise of untold riches from the Middle East cannot be discredited just yet, the fact of the matter is that as long as Mike Ashley stays at the helm, funds will be limited.

That means that any signings the Magpies make will, realistically, have to be picked out of the bargain bin.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to compromise on quality though.

Rafa Benitez has shown several times during his tenure at St. James’ Park that he has an eye for a savvy deal, with the likes of Fabian Schar and the loan signing of Salomon Rondon showing that the Toon Army can conduct good business on the relative cheap.

And that’s why the club should make a move for Marcus Thuram this summer.

The French striker, son of World Cup winner Lilian, has been in fine form for Ligue 1 side EA Guingamp this season, hitting 13 goals in all competitions, and German outlet Bild report that he could be available for as little as £7 million.

The Magpies have been linked with the 21-year-old before, with TEAMtalk claiming that United were interested in snapping him up.

Now would be the perfect time to make good on that interest and take him to Tyneside.

The 6’2″ forward [Transfermarkt] has a big future ahead of him in the game, and if Newcastle can move now, they could seal a cut price masterstroke for a player who is sure to be in demand for years to come.
