OPINION
Of all the positions Newcastle United could think about strengthening this summer, the heart of defence wouldn’t be the first to spring to mind as a priority. With Rafa Benitez opting for a three man unit most of the time, and with Fabian Schar, Jamal Lascelles, and Florian Lejeune generally being his go-to trio, it’s not obvious why the Magpies would be looking to snap up more defenders. Even with Lejeune’s long term injury, the Toon Army still have Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett, and Ciaran Clark to fall back on. So the suggestion that they all move for Bristol City defender Adam Webster, as reported by the Mirror, has understandably been met with a fair amount of bemusement and apathy on Tyneside. Honestly though, he would be a great signing. Calm and composed on the ball, he is more than capable of spraying passes all over the place and starting attacks from the edge of his own box. Add to that his imposing physicality and his brilliant reading of the game, and it feels like a matter of time before Webster makes the step up to the Premier League, when he does, if it is with somebody else, Newcastle supporters will be wishing that they had pounced.
