It’s a damning indictment of the state of things at Newcastle United when a player as talented and adored as Ayoze Perez is being implored to leave for his own good by the fans. With Rafa Benitez on his way out of the door, as confirmed by the club on Monday, the Magpies are facing a monumentally uncertain spell ahead, and it’s hard to say for certain who will still be donning the black and white stripes come the start of the season in August. Even harder to predict is who will be prowling the touchline next term, but whoever it is, it won’t be Rafa. His will be a hard act to follow, and whoever is entrusted with the job will have big shoes to fill. Throw into the mix an owner who is renowned for being a nightmare to work with and you have a genuinely thankless task ahead of them. And that has been reflected in the fans’ reaction to the news. Perez posted a message to his manager on Twitter, thanking him for his service, and immediately, and army of Geordies jumped on the post, urging the Spaniard to follow his compatriot out of the door. If there was ever a sign that the Magpies are a sinking ship, this is surely it.
