Some things just aren’t meant to be.

In professional football, players who have spent their whole careers looking like they are on the cusp of being the next big thing can suddenly start playing a like their legs are made of jelly.

That has largely been the case with Joselu ever since he arrived in England.

The Spaniard signed for Stoke City in 2015, and has never really managed to hit the heights ever since.

Four years in England have yielded just 11 goals and six assists, and you can’t help wondering why Newcastle saw fit to spend the best part of £5 million on him in the first place.

But spend it they did, and since then he has become something of a figure of fun around St. James’ Park.

With Salomon Rondon leading the line superbly this season, and with Ayoze Perez really coming into his own alongside the Venezuelan, Joselu has fallen way down the pecking order on Tyneside, and it’s probably fair to say that there wouldn’t be too many sleepless nights were he to depart this summer.

Which is why many Newcastle fans will be delighted by his latest comments on his future.

Speaking to Radio Marca, as quoted by the Chronicle, he said: “I have possibilities to change but it will depend on the new direction that will come to the club.

“I have one year left on my contract at Newcastle.”

This will be music to the ears of the Geordie faithful.

The 6’3″ striker [Transfermarkt] doesn’t go as far as to say that he is leaving the club this window, but he is at least leaving the door open to the possibility.

For a player who has contributed as little as he has, that can only be a good thing.
