Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame has received an offer from Qatar for his services, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that an offer from the Middle East is known to be on the table for the 31-year-old, whose current Magpies contract is set to expire this summer.

There is thought to only be a slight chance that the Senegal international remains at St James’ Park once the managerial situation has been resolved.

Newcastle will be looking to recruit plentifully this summer whether Diame leaves or not.

OPINION

This is an interesting one, isn’t it? At this moment in time it would appear to be highly unlikely that Diame stays on Tyneside beyond this summer. He’s been wanting a longer deal than the club are willing to offer him, and so he probably views his future as lying elsewhere. He is still a solid Premier League midfielder who has contributed pretty solidly this season, but it does feel like his time at Newcastle is up. With that said, why wouldn’t he take a big money offer from Qatar? Obviously he would be sacrificing something in terms of the quality of football he’d be playing, but as he enters the twilight of his career, who could blame him for taking the biggest deal on the table? The Senegal star could still do a job in Europe, but it’s whether he values, at 31 years of age, the standard of football over the money that will be on offer in Qatar. We will likely find out soon enough, but you can’t blame Diame whatever he decides to do.
