OPINION

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie is surely spot on with his theory about the contract talks between Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez amid takeover talks.

According to Sky Sports, Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan has said that he has ‘agreed terms’ with Mike Ashley over the potential takeover of Newcastle.

Downie was quick to jump to the conclusion that this may have been the leading factor in the ongoing delay regarding Benitez signing a new contract with the club.

“It may just explain why there’s been such a delay in getting Rafa Benitez’s new contract signed,” said Downie to Sky Sports.

“Obviously Newcastle have been in talks with him for the last week or so.

“That seems to have dragged on and this may be the reason why.”

Downie is likey right with his comments regarding the continuous contract talks that have been going on between Benitez and Newcastle, and the latest reports suggesting that takeover talks have been ongoing in recent weeks may help to explain why there is yet to have been an official conformation of a new contract for Benitez.

The Newcastle faithful will have been worrying for the future of their manager in recent weeks, but now they will no doubt be stress-free for the most part, as it looks likely that their club is on course to be taken over, which will be a huge step and a new chapter for the football club.

Although there is still yet to have been any concrete news regarding the Magpies’ boss’ future, it is likely that the decision regarding Benitez will be made once the ownership of the club has been resolved, which could be sooner rather than later after the potential buyer confirmed he has agreed terms with current owner Ashley.

It seems that Newcastle fans have a lot to be excited about in the coming months, especially with the thought of having brand new owners going into the summer transfer window.
