DeAndre Yedlin has undergone surgery on a groin problem which he picked up in training before Saturday’s defeat to Liverpool.

The American right back, who was revealed to be out by manager Rafael Benitez, confirmed the news of his operation on his Instagram writing: “Surgery complete, now time to recover”.

Yedlin’s season is now over with only one game left to play and it is uncertain how long the American will be out for post-surgery.

The 25-year-old has been a mainstay for Rafael Benitez this season making 29 appearances in a back five and has been replaced by Javier Manquillo in recent weeks.

OPINION

This is the smartest outcome from this situation for DeAndre Yedlin. With Newcastle confirming their Premier League status for next season earlier in April, there is no need to risk further aggravation on an injury that needed surgery. Now Yedlin has a full summer break to recover from the injury and fans along with Yedlin will be hoping that he can come back at the beginning of pre-season and cement his spot in the side ahead of the next Premier League campaign. After captaining his country for the first time in March, the full-back will also miss the CONCAF Gold Cup which will make Yedlin even more determined to return and make up for lost time for his side. Javier Manquillo has recently taken his side in the place over the American and Yedlin will need to prove his worth over the summer and there will be no excuses after recovering with him being at peak fitness after surgery.
