Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has been dealt another injury blow having picked a fresh hamstring injury, according to the Shields Gazette.

The local outlet report that Dummett was due to meet up with the Wales squad for their UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary, but that he has now returned to St James’ Park to being his recovery.

Dummett is thought to have picked up the hamstring injury during Newcastle’s final Premier League game of the season at Fulham, which the Magpies won 4-0, with the Welshman taken off after 81 minutes at Craven Cottage with a hamstring problem which he has failed to recover from ahead of Wales’ international fixtures.

OPINION

It will be a blow for both Dummett and Wales that the left-back will not be fit enough to be a part of Ryan Giggs’ squad for their forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers. It will also be a worry for Newcastle, with the defender suffering continuous issues with hamstring injuries going back as far as the 2015/16 season. Dummett was even ruled out for around a month earlier on in the season with a similar problem to the one he is believed to be suffering from now. Rafa Benitez will be hoping that the Wales international will be able to discover the problem behind these recurring injuries over the summer, as the Spaniard will be wanting to have a fully fit squad for the start of next term if he remains in charge at St James’ Park. The left-back will also probably be highly frustrated with suffering the same injury problems on a frequent basis and will be hoping he is able to sort the problem out in time for next season, with the defender not wanting to miss out any more time through injury next term.
