Newcastle cannot take anything for granted

OPINION

To preface this, nobody can blame Newcastle United fans for being excited.

If, out of the blue, a supposedly filthy rich Sheikh rocked up all of a sudden to take your club out of the hands of an owner who has done nothing but run it into the ground, you’d be pretty happy too.

Of course, nobody knows how sure what exactly is happening just yet, and the continued silence from St. James’ Park is becoming deafening, but at the very least, it would appear that the Bin Zayed Group are seriously interested, and that’s a start.

But nothing can be taken for granted, and at the moment, for all of the talk and supposition, the Magpies are in exactly the same position they were in this time last week. There’s still a chance that they will be in the same position this time next year.

So it is both frustrating and a little shortsighted to see some people spending the Toon Army’s new money before they even have it.

The Chronicle published a piece yesterday asking who the club would buy if they had £200 million in the transfer kitty, using Football Manager to simulate the window and find out.

In amongst the influx of new signings were Chelsea starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi and Liverpool ace Xherdan Shaqiri.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming, and fans will no doubt be doing exactly that every waking second at the moment, but once the media start getting involved and talking as if a deal is in the offing, you’re setting yourself up for a fall.

This could still happen, of course, but nobody should count their chickens before they have hatched.
