Danny Murphy has lavished praise on Newcastle United fans for sticking by the team, suggesting that it has helped to turn the side’s fortunes around on the pitch.

The Magpies endured a torrid start to the season, but have looked like a a new club in the second half of the campaign, and could finish as high as 13th depending on results on the final day.

And Murphy believes that the fans have had a lot to do with that newfound success.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I like the way Newcastle United fans backed Rafa Benitez and the players during difficult times.

“I’m sure it was one of the reasons they were able to turn their home form around and survive quite comfortably. ”

OPINION

Credit where credit is due, Newcastle fans have been superb this year. It would have been quite easy for them to throw their toys out of the pram after a disastrous start to the season, but they stuck by their side through thick and thin, and now they are beginning to reap the rewards with some genuinely impressive performances. Of course, the main man you have to thank for that is Rafa Benitez. To the outsider, it may seem as if the Toon Army are something of a broken record, harping on about the Spaniard again and again, but it just goes to show how vital he is to this side. Without him, lord knows where they would be, and it’s fair to say that a fair few people would be a lot less likely to go and support the side week after week if there was somebody else at the helm. Here’s hoping he can be convinced to stay, because honestly, he is crucial.
