Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer sent a message to manager Rafael Benitez and the club’s supporters after the team’s 4-0 win over Fulham on Sunday.
The Magpies eased to a tremendous final day victory at Craven Cottage, and Shearer was clearly delighted with what his old team achieved and the support they received from the Toon Army.
“Well done Rafael Benitez,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Well done lads. And to the thousands that travelled to Fulham today you’re brilliant as usual.”

Shearer hits the nail on the head, here. Everyone involved for Newcastle on Sunday, and throughout the season, deserve huge credit for what they were able to achieve – and that includes the supporters. Ultimately, though, Benitez is the man who truly deserves the plaudits after another campaign in which the Magpies comfortably secured their Premier League status for another year. This isn’t a great squad by Premier League standards, not by any means. They have some quality players but, by and large, you have to say they’re some way off the overall quality of player on display at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City and the like. So for Benitez to do what he’s done with this group of players is quite incredible. He has done a phenomenal job yet again and it would be such a shame if this big win represented his last game in charge of a club that he clearly has so much affection for.
