Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez will hold further contract talks with the club after initial discussions failed to break the impasse, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Spaniard met with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley for discussions over his future in London on Wednesday.

However, nothing was fully thrashed out as both parties stuck to their guns, meaning that they will all go back to the drawing board ready for further talks in the future.

OPINION

Well, it certainly doesn’t sound as if these first round of talks between Benitez and the club were particularly productive, does it? Obviously it’s going to take time for everyone to agree on the fine points, but it sounds as if very little progress was made on Wednesday. That will be disconcerting for supporters, who will have hoped for a speedy resolution to the Benitez situation. However, nothing with Newcastle is ever simple, as we all know. Benitez probably has a fair few things he wants to get sorted out before he commits his future to the Magpies, so we can’t simply blame Ashley and Charnley for not much happening on the opening day of discussions. However, the main thing is that everyone involved is coming back to the table for further talks. That’s what is important here. Hopefully this all gets resolved quickly and Benitez can begin his work in the summer transfer window as soon as possible.
