Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is wanted by PSG and Marseille, according to the Daily Mirror.

According to The Mirror, French powerhouses are poised to offer Benitez a way out of St James Park with discussions over a new deal with the Magpies stalling.

The national newspaper report that the former Real Madrid manager has been ‘sounded out via middlemen’ over a potential move to France, with European giants PSG and Marseille showing interest.

As it appears more and more likely that Thomas Tuchel will be departing from Paris in the summer following PSG’s exit from the Champions League, Rafa Benitez would potentially be seen as the perfect replacement for the German coach.

OPINION

In this situation, Mike Ashley should definitely be concerned for the future of his manager. You would think that if an offer came in from PSG, Benitez wouldn’t be able to turn it down. The Spaniard could potentially have the choice between a Newcastle side in contrast, or a PSG side who will no doubt be challenging in Europe and aiming for another successive Ligue 1 title. Also, when considering Benitez’s experience in the Champions League, it feels like if he were to make the move to France, it wouldn’t be completely unexpected, as surely a club competing in Europe would be a more attractive career move, rather than staying at St. James’ Park. The Newcastle faithful will be hoping that Ashley can lure Benitez’s attention back to Tyneside, but if not, he will surely be destined for a move to France, where European football will be on the cards. Unfortunately for Newcastle fans, the decision may end up being a no-brainer for Benitez should PSG come calling.
