It’s far beyond us mere mortals to understand the thinking of world class football managers, but in the case of Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez’s stance on utility man Matt Ritchie, it’s fair to question the Spaniard’s decision.

A report from The Sun on Tuesday claimed that the Magpies chief has told Ritchie that he can look for a new club this summer as he will not be getting an extension to his current contract.

The Scotland international reportedly had talks with Benitez over his future last week and was informed that, due to his age, he will not be given fresh terms when his deal expires in the summer of 2021.

Newcastle are infamous for the strictness of their youth policy. They don’t like buying ageing players or having them on their books. However, in this case an exception surely needs to be made.

Ritchie will turn 30 in September, meaning he’ll be a few months shy of his 32nd birthday when his current contract runs out. That’s not that old and he probably wouldn’t be after a bumper deal at that stage. A one year extension with the option for a further year would be a perfect solution, no?

The former Bournemouth man has been one of the team’s best players this season, adapting to a new role as a left wing back with seamless ease. His reward? Apparently it’s being told he can leave this summer if he wants.

Ritchie’s feelings on the matter are unknown, but from a footballing standpoint this simply doesn’t make sense for the Magpies. With the way Ritchie has played this term you have to wonder what Benitez is thinking here.

The club need to make a u-turn because their policy against experienced players is going to come back to bite them here. Losing Ritchie in the summer would be a huge blow.
