Newcastle United are set to receive a figure over £22.5million for their television appearances this season as they trump the majority of their rivals for how many games have been broadcast, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 19 Premier League games which the Magpies have seen, or are set to see, televised over the 38 match campaign will net the club an eight figure windfall, with one more appearance on the likes of Sky Sports and BT Sport than last season.

Newcastle are said to have picked up £21.4million for their 18 televised outings last summer, and the 19 this year trumps all but the big six of the Premier League, with Everton their closest challengers on 18.

Opinion

It just goes to show that success is not everything when it comes to football fans and the Toon Army’s incredible support has no doubt played a big part in seeing the club televised so often. It is something of a double edged sword – the Magpies pick up an extra bit of money to add to their coffers but the fans are forced to endure long, and often inconvenient, journeys across the country. Still, they would not complain all that much if they actually saw that money reinvested into the team, but with Mike Ashley at the helm they are unlikely to see that cash at all. Their income of more than £22million is enough to buy the club a very talented footballer in the transfer market, or to invest it into their training facilities. Will that happen under Ashley? Not a chance, and it is such a shame for the travelling Geordies who support their side week in, week out, no matter where they might be playing.
