Newcastle United is in the process of being sold for up to £400million, according to TalkSPORT pundit Dave Kitston.

The former Reading and Middlesbrough striker claimed on the radio station that Mike Ashley has not taken the North-East club off the market and is instead getting closer to selling up.

“It’s going to be between £300million and £400million. But it is going,” Kitson told talkSPORT’s US broadcast, as quoted by the Chronicle.

Host Rennie then asked: “So all this stuff about Mike Ashley taking it off the market is just guff?”

Tom Kitson replied: “It’s gone. It’s being done as we speak.”

OPINION

It seems bizarre that Kitson would be in the loop about Newcastle when there has been little talk about Ashley selling the club for quite some time. There hasn’t really been any major speculation about the controversial owner selling up since last year, so this claim by Kitson is quite simply out of the blue. Kitson has made a name for himself as being quite the loud-mouth since hanging up his boots and becoming a pundit. He claimed last year that players like Raheem Sterling have made themselves a target for racist abuse, while he has also revealed the time he tried to attack his former Stoke manager Tony Pulis with a pair of scissors. Kitson seems to be intent on making a name for himself in the most ridiculous manner, and Newcastle supporters should take this latest news with a pinch of salt. Much more reliable sources have been wrong about the sale of the Magpies in the past, so we doubt Kitson is going to be the man with his finger on the pulse.
