It is a shock to see that some Newcastle United fans even remember who Antonio Barreca is, let alone urging Rafa Benitez to recall the rarely-seen left-back from the periphery of his squad. Barreca, 24, has made just one appearance for Newcastle since joining the club on loan from Monaco in January. He featured for four minutes off the bench against Tottenham on February 2, but since then the Italian has failed to make any of Benitez’s matchday squads. After losing 2-0 to Arsenal on Monday night, in which Matt Ritchie has a shocker as the left-sided wing-back, some supporters want Benitez to hand Barreca a second chance. No fan has seen enough of Barreca to suggest he would be a better option than Ritchie, and Benitez will certainly have seen enough of the loanee to decide whether or not he is worthy of a start. It is so clear that Barreca is not good enough. He struggled to play for Monaco when they were threatened with relegation in Ligue 1 and now he cannot get onto Newcastle’s bench in the Premier League. Leave him on the fringes of the squad and get rid of him as soon as the season ends.
