Journalist Ciaran Kelly has revealed that Newcastle United star Ayoze Perez wants to see progress from the club if he is to remain at St James’ Park.

The Chronicle correspondent revealed the news on his personal Twitter account, claiming that the Spaniard wants to see the Magpies compete at the top end of the Premier League.

Kelly asserts that Perez loves the club and the city, and sees Newcastle as a sleeping giant, but that he’s not going to settle for another relegation battle next season.

The 25-year-old’s attitude mirrors that of manager Rafael Benitez and, like his countryman, Perez isn’t after a bigger payday. He simply wants to see the club show a bit of ambition.

OPINION

This is the big problem at Newcastle, and you have to feel really sorry for the supporters because they’ll be the ones who suffer in the end. Perez – and Benitez – simply want the club to show a bit of ambition and try and get to the level that it deserves to be at. However, Mike Ashley, Lee Charnley and co. simply aren’t willing to do that. Therefore, the Magpies are likely going to be stuck in mediocrity until those two leave the club. However, by that point Benitez and Perez may have decided to move on to pastures new. And who could blame them? Why wouldn’t they, really? They would be cherished at another club for the huge talents that they are, not merely tolerated and not given their due. Neither man is chasing a big payday, no, they just want to be competing at a higher level. At no other Premier League club would that be a problem. Alas, that’s life at Newcastle these days.
